Castanets of the South

Castañuelas del Sur was founded in Seville in the 1980s by master craftsmen José and Juan Vela Hernández.
Both began their apprenticeship with their father in the 1960s, at the early ages of 7 and 9, gradually learning the difficult task of handcrafting the castanet.

In the early days, they came into contact with leading dance professionals and concert performers, who have served as a guiding light for the castanet's constant renewal, both in design and in sound and materials used, always evolving according to their needs.
